Dr David Dowson
Dr David Dowson was an N.H.S. general practitioner from the early 1970's
until the mid 1980's, and during this time developed an interest in
complementary medicine, initially acupuncture. He was concerned that orthodox
medicine often treats the symptoms of disease, rather than addressing the cause,
and became interested in the way in which our environment, including diet, can
contribute to the development of disease.
Whilst still a G.P. he conducted the first research in the U.K. into the
health effects of electromagnetic fields, demonstrating an increase in headaches
and depression in populations close to overhead power lines. This study led to
an ongoing interest in this, but also in the possible beneficial effects of E.M.
fields.
From 1986 to 1993 Dr Dowson was a partner at The Centre for the Study of
Complementary Medicine in Southampton which was the leader in the field at that
time. During these years he developed methods of testing patients for E.S. by
exposing them, in a screened room, to known frequencies and strengths of E.M.
fields. It was also found that E.S. patients could be 'desensitised' by exposure
to other frequencies. He also helped develop further an electromagnetic device
for patients with E.S.
Since 1993 Dr Dowson has been in independent practice, primarily in the West
Country. The main condition he treats is M.E., in which E.S. can be a
contributing factor but there are increasing numbers of patients with E.S.,
leading to the opinion that it is becoming much more common, probably due to
increasing electropollution and lack of legislation to limit exposure in the
U.K.
