In a book from 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' series, Douglas Adams describes a man who has built four walls of a house which he has decorated with carpets, wallpaper and furniture on the outside, a kind of inside-out house.
He calls the world outside 'The Asylum' and lives within the four walls of his own private sanity.
This, to me, seems like an accurate summation of what living with ES feels like most of the time!
